Getting to the HEART of Black History & Health

Cheers to a healthy HEART and love for all things health & wellness. This month, we want to focus on ways to keep your heart healthy and share the impact of chiropractic care on your overall wellness. Did you know the most influential black men in chiropractic care besides our very own Dr. Williams are Harvey Lillard & Dr. Fred Rubel?

"Harvey Lillard was the owner and operator of a janitorial company in Davenport, Iowa, and he happened to work in the same building as DD Palmer, who would later become the founder of chiropractic. Palmer was a magnetic healer at the time, and Lillard had been deaf for 17 years. An accident had knocked Lillard's spine severely out of alignment, and Palmer noticed the severe crookedness. Concluding that this may be the source of Lillard's deafness, he performed his first chiropractic adjustment in 1895. According to the records taken by Palmer, Lillard's hearing was fully restored the moment the spine was aligned." (Link to reference)  This shows how vital chiropractic care is to your overall health.

Then, in 1913, Dr. Fred Rubel graduated from "the National School of Chiropractic and was the first certified black chiropractor. In 1914, a mere year after graduation, he founded the Rubel College of Chiropractic." (Link to reference)  While Dr. Palmer is the founding "father" of chiropractic care, many prominent men and women have made such a difference in this field.

Another fun fact: Did you know you could impact your heart health if incorrectly aligned? Yep! You could have a misaligned vertebra that could press on a nerve that could impact your lung function and the oxygenation of your blood. This is another reason we should maintain a chiropractic care routine to keep our bodies and HEARTS healthy!

As we continue our health journey in 2024, let's celebrate our hearts, love, health, and our beloved chiropractor, Dr. Williams. Hint: WCC has a big anniversary this year, so keep your eyes open for more details on how to show your LOVE of WCC this year!
